Cooking

After coming back to school from break the food here just does not hold up in any way, my stomach was feeling sick as I started running this afternoon. This idea was started when I realized that my biggest accomplishment this break was the fact that I chose, shopped for, and cooked all of my dinners. My dinners were: New Orleans Red Beans and Rice (family recipe), Stuffed Turkish Peppers, Enchiladas, Stuffed Burgers and fries, and regular Chicken with roasted potatoes.

It got me thinking that I really like cooking. Especially in this modern era when food come prepackaged and there is alternative health food craze I feel like home cooked meals are great. I am especially in favor of meals that edge people away from their comfort zone so they are no longer eating the same four foods over and over again. Anyways what I'm trying to say that cooking is fun and everyone should try their hand at it.

Crusader Kings II

Wow! Man do I love this game! While the Total War series is exactly that, a series about wars. This series is  about making your dynasty simply survive the test of time. You play a single character and from there you build your family. Some parts of it are historically accurate, but after the game starts it can all fall apart. Which is totally ok. It is not the most interesting game to watch but it is still amazing fun to plot against your enemies  The only downsides are as follows: the game is 40 bucks on steam right now which is still a lot of money plus all of the DLC is about another 20. My advice is simply to wait until it goes on sale.

I will be doing a "Lets Play" type thing as a particular family or dynasty. Literally pick any country in Europe in 1066 and I'll play them  if you want to make me muck around with French kings and what not(this includes the mideastern countries). If not I think I will be playing as the Byzantines.

Sleeping Giant

In southern CT where I live there are not a lot of truly breath taking hikes. There are interesting hikes, nature walks and walking paths but nothing that really makes you go "wow that's freaking sweet". Sleeping Giant on the other hand is well worth the drive if you are in the area.

Last Impressions: Dead Space

This is my full review of Dead Space 1, the survival horror-3rd person shooter, from Visceral games and published by EA.

Dead Space is advertised as a survival horror game but sadly does not live up to the potential scares as something like Slender does. On the other hand some of the game's mechanics can instill a real fear in the player. If I had to sum up Dead Space in a quick statement it would have to be: badly paced. A more detailed explanation of my pithy review after the jump.

JOBS!

Ah yes the job market in the states in recent years would be good. That is if you replace good with impossible difficult. This summer I decided that it was high time that I got a "big-boy job", a job that is more serious then retail or waiting tables. This whole task is really difficult; as I told my family there were 200 applications for a single entry level position. I have no idea what to do to make myself more "out there" for employers. We'll see how this goes, I have hope but at the same time this is super discouraging.

Sorry I'll get some real content up soon but this is the week before "spring" break and every professor seems to want to assign something.

NanoWriMo

So for the uninitiated NanoWriMo is a competition to write a novel of 50k words in the single month of November and while I did attempt it last year I did not make it past the first few thousand words. But this time I am going to try again and see where the mood takes me. This project will be ongoing a will be updated sporadically with bits of information about the world and possibly some story one off sections. Yes I know it is not November but I don't want to be constrained by a single month, also real life interrupts my writing process from time to time. Anyways some details and general statements about the project after the jump.

Dead Space: First Impressions

With the release of Dead Space 3 I decided that I finally needed to play the series. This is a first impressions of Dead Space 1, eventually I will do a full review when I finish it. This post though is a series of things that struck me during the first few hours of game play.

When the game begins the player is asked to lower the brightness of their TV in order to give a more atmospheric feeling to the game. Bioshock did this and it was amazingly atmospheric and scary especially in the first level. Dead Space on the other hand never reaches the same level of creepy, not only is the darkness not dark it is paced horribly. In at least a few sections in Bioschock the anticipation of a splicer jumping out and wrenching my knee caps was enough to keep me on edge. Dr. Steinman's lab in particular had a very horror-ry feel to it and used the atmosphere and crazed splicers made it scary. In Dead Space however the necromorphs make themselves known within the first 15 minutes. Not only known but also in your face, ruining any sense of the unknown. Part of what makes games like Amnesia scary is not the monster but rather the unknown and the knowledge that a monster is out there and is torturing you. Dead Space does neither of these things, it shows all of the monsters in a brightly lit room as they shamble (or sprint) across to rip your face off. Dead Space is not scary, it causes jumps if it is lucky with punishing the player who is busy fighting something else. The atmosphere tries to make itself scary but does not really come to fruition as many people claim.

The Soundtrack, ah yes the sound track. A sound track can mean the difference between a making the atmosphere appropriate or completely breaking it. In a good horror game their should be little sound and that sound should only really be flavor sound, or noise of the world. In Dead Space however the soundtrack is blared every single time an enemy appears on the scene. Now the music can still be done right with basically battle music but Dead Space runs into the problem of smashing an entire orchestra of instruments together to induce more jump scares. If you already expect the monsters though the music makes everything loud and annoying. Personally by the time the music "struck up" I was already annoyed.

During the introduction there are several name drops of Isaac's love interest Nicole. It turns out Issac is looking for his lost girlfriend but sadly she is not there to meet him (surprise surprise). I can only expect that the point of the girlfriend motivation is to give Isaac some motivation other than "shoot the dudes". The problem is that I cannot empathize with him if he has no voice. Yes, there are some games where a silent protagonist works . I feel no attachment to Isaac even though he is supposed to be lost in a horrible environment where he is losing his mind, his family, his friends, and the very ship around him is trying to kill him. Isaac never mentions anything, I know nothing of his motivations besides what other characters tell me, which causes for very awkward dialogue and some potential plot holes. Isaac is not a good character right now, he is like a CODBLOPS protagonist, we push him around and shoot him and it works that is about it, he is flat, uninteresting, bland etc. In the later games he gains a voice which could be interesting, I hope.

At time of writing I am currently on chapter 5 or so I have no sense of the story other than the fact that these things appeared and Isaac needs to get off the ship and the monsters came from the planet and infected the crew. That't it, that is all I know about the story, its a horror story in space that's it.

The setting is in space which is the best setting in my opinion and the application of the zero-g mechanic is appropriately confusing and disorienting. But the ship as a whole is a very good setting for a horror game like this. It gives a sense of confinement that with out an escape plan Isaac will die. The use of a space ship also allows for several convenient plot devices for Isaac to go fix. But I have a soft spot in my heart for anything that takes place in space.

Dead Space is an interesting setting but so far has failed at making me truly scared, there were moments of "jump scares" but nothing of the oppressive horror of Slender.

HeyO

If anyone reads this: a quick introduction as to what I intend to do with this blog:

Videogames:
Sometimes I have these really cool ideas for what is wrong or right with the games industry and up until recently I have not had a platform to express my opinions. These will be reviews, first impressions, cries of despair etc.

Hiking:
Conversely to a lot of stereotyped nerds I have a passion for the outdoors and I will sometimes post my reaction to trails or an idea for a backpacking trait or something along those lines. Maybe even some pictures if I remember to take any.

Dnd/and other stories:
I have a passion for DnD and other stories and I am part of two campaigns at anyone time and some times I just create worlds on my own. I think I will post ideas to here to give people an idea of what I am thinking of.

Real Life/Politics:
These posts will be kept to a minimum unless there is something to directly affects my life.
