Sleeping Giant

In southern CT where I live there are not a lot of truly breath taking hikes. There are interesting hikes, nature walks and walking paths but nothing that really makes you go "wow that's freaking sweet". Sleeping Giant on the other hand is well worth the drive if you are in the area.

The park used to be an old quarry and, from a distance, looks as though a very large person, or giant if you will, just laid down to sleep. It's body is a series of peaks, while not large by any stretch, still manage create very beautiful views of the surrounding area. My friend and I hiked around about two thirds of the park in the course of two days it it was totally worth it. We did the head which is the tallest section, surrounded on most sides with extremely steep inclines or just straight cliffs. We climbed this during winter with crampons (not like the Mt. Everest variety) which was a very smart move as the 36 inches of snow CT got recently had not melted. On the other day we walked around the giant's body. While the views were not as impressive as the ones from the head the trails are safer and much less dangerous than the head.

In short:  great hike, close to my house, rewarding views, should do again in the summer.

Up next: likely a post about the sequester and how stupid it is /politics rage
